Grower owned and dedicated to providing value throughout the supply chain, GrainSearch seeks out, through the latest R&D techniques, new varieties of seed that significantly improve the productivity of shareholeders, farming businesses and agricultural enterprises.
Inititally formed in 2002 by a small group of innovative grain growers, GrainSearch has now grown to over 200 grower-based shareholders. These growers identified the availability and potential of alternative wheat and barley germplasm that had the genetic capability to significantly improve the returns to growers in South West Victoria.
GrainSearch has a history of releasing "cutting edge" varieties such as:
Wheat: Amarok, Beaufort, Frelon, Teesdale
Barley: Ballan, GS1228, GS1234, GS5092
These varieties have significantly improved the gross margins of a number of growers.
The capabilities of GrainSearch have developed since its inception, which has enabled it to attract other wheat and barley germplasm into its evaluation portfolio. More recently, GrainSearch has successfully gained the licence to evaluate and commercialise NewFarm Crop varieties (Europe's leading barley breeding program), the AUSGRAINZ durum and winter wheat program, and a number of novel lines from LongReach Plant Breeders.
The linking of growers with end users via the specific varietal grain quality traits has GrainSearch's grower shareholders excited about the potential grain products and supply chain opportunities.
In 2011, GrainSearch will have seed available for a number of varieties. These varieties include Revenue Winter Wheat, Beaufort Red Wheat, GS1234 Barley and Westminster Barley.
